S1E7 Wisdom from the Road Part 1: Overland Observations 1-6
Road lessons for the soul! We’ve been on the road for half a year now. We’ve discovered some wisdom along the way. For the next few episodes, we will be sharing insights from our overland travels across the US. The first two episodes will be about general lessons we’ve learned. Then, we’ll share direct advice from friends we’ve visited along the way. This show also provides some introductory information about living on the road if you or someone you love might find that worth trying. We normally talk about avoiding religious manipulation. Here, the topic is admittedly a bit different, but the connection is that by living simply, it is easier to untangle ourselves from unhealthy relationships, groups, and ways of living.
At time mark 01:12 we briefly interview a few overlanders we ran into in Huntington Beach to draw on some of their insights about overlanding.
Here are Some Links to People and Places We Mentioned
We discuss a Baja California restaurant started by Mauricio Parra called Nomada. He is also the director of the Baja Rally and hosts visitors to Ensenada with his wife Abigail via Lost in Baja.
We highly recommend folks check out Baja’s wine country, the Valle de Guadalupe.
The Parras introduced us to an overland couple, the Traveling Tuttles. You can hear Jeff and Stacie interview the Tuttles on the old Virtue in the Wasteland podcast.
We mentioned a distillery who let us stay with them by their bass pond, called Casey Jones Distillery. They have been shining for generations and are now legal.
We mention our favorite free camping spot, Blues Beach. Here’s an article about it. Don’t tell any haters, only good friends, since this is a choice spot.
John Steinbeck, Travels with Charlie: In Search of America is mentioned.
We are in a heavy Lance cabover camper, but here’s a lighter and groovy option by Capri.
We mentioned Boondockers Welcome, a resource we use and love. And if you click here to sign up for yourself, you’ll help support this podcast.
We also mentioned Harvest Hosts, which is a dreamy way to have a honeymoon style vacation for no cost other than the wine you might buy. If you click through us here you can get %15 off the sign up fee.
The Following Are Other Overlanders We Mention or Interview
Wandering Peso, a couple currently stuck in Ecuador
Little House on the Highway are a couple who have a super cool skoolie
Wanderboom are a sagely couple with a good website
Roadwarriors360 is associated with the gentlemen we interviewed at the end who had good advice about stealth camping
NOTES ABOUT MUSIC:
The opening sounds are from Jonathan Geidel’s track called “Song Water”. Geidel is a former student of Jeff’s. We are grateful to him for letting us play with his tracks, which you can find under his moniker Jonny Trappleseed here.
The piano playing at the beginning was freestyle musings on the keys by Aidan Mallinson.
The Farsi song at 1:09 is by our dear honorary daughter Mana Nikjou, whose songs can be obtained here.
