This is a second episode in a short series we are doing related to lessons we’ve learned about and during life on the road. For this show, we discuss six more general lessons we’ve learned about traveling along the road. We discuss the value of taxi/Uber/Lyft drivers, how single young women are using van life to unplug from the patriarchy, the possible reason for increasing interest in paganism, and the emotional toll of religious signage on America’s highways. We discuss the difference between mysticism and magic, and use Maslow’s concept of the hierarchy of needs to understand changes in America’s religious landscape. We also comment on some ecological warning signs. What we don’t mention on the show is that as we’re uploading this we’re having some breathing trouble (it’s not at the level of an emergency mind you) from the red tide here off the west coast of Florida. We end with a reference to a follow up email from a previous caller, Phil.

Here are links to stuff we mentioned:

  • We end with the song “Fan Mail” from Micah Bournes

  • Various folks are publishing the works of Evelyn Underhill on mysticism. Poke around and you can find free or low cost stuff.

  • We mention a documentary called Marjoe.

  • Here are links to our favorite hot dog spots: a) El Güero Canelo in Tucson b) La Moon Colombian hot dogs in Miami and c) Tijuana dogs of Los Angeles
